considerable quantity of musical pieces from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance has been handed down, but there is only little information about the way they were interpreted. There is usually no information about tempo, instruments, distribution of lyrics. Rhythm and intonation may be contestable as well. Even if an interpret of such music takes advantage of accessible sources, he often has to rely on his own intuition and creativity, which help him to capture the taste of the period and the composer's goal and to give new life to a forgotten composition.
