Interpretation of medieval and Renaissance music is almost unimaginable without musical instruments of the period. Those can be hardly ever replaced by modern ones. It is not only question of what the instrument looks like; a different construction of the instrument completely changes the sound and requires a different technique of playing. This influences the interpretation of the piece and the choice of instruments.
Most of the instruments which were known and used in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance have substantially changed over the centuries; some of them totally disappeared from European music. Only few of them survived in a slightly modified version; they did mostly in the folklore of different nations.
At its concerts, Weytora uses copies of historical wind, string and percussion instruments. They were reconstructed according to historical paintings and illustrations, originals deposited in museums, descriptions and textbooks for musicians. The complete information was not always accessible; the rest had to be implemented by experience and imagination. At this place we would like to thank all those who made our instruments because without them, Weytora might never have come into existence.
